The Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination

It is indeed pleasing that the reforms initiated by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) in Nigeria is achieving the desired effects. Candidates are once again sitting for the matriculation examination on the 18th of June to determine who among them will move on to the higher institutions for further studies. The Universities Matriculation Examination (UME) and Monotechnics, Polytechnics and Colleges of Education Examination (MPCE) were unified in 2010 to provide a common platform for entrance into tertiary institutions. This common platform is the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

JAMB examination had in the past been criticized by the public. The criticism climaxed with the introduction of the Post-JAMB assessment conducted by individual universities to add further credibility to the results of JAMB.

Under the leadership of the present Chief Executive, Prof. 'Dibu Ojerinde, OON, however, series of transformation have taken place aimed at repositioning JAMB to deliver on its mandate. The newest of this initiative is the use of Bio-metric in its 2011 examination. The Bio-metric will hopefully ensure 0% tolerance in impersonation, a major form of malpractice.

Professor 'Dibu Ojerinde is a man of many parts. His profile will be examined in due course.
